Why coach John Maduka remains upbeat despite poor start

Despite failing to register a single win since the beginning of the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season, Maritzburg United coach John Maduka remains upbeat that it’s only a matter of time before the tables turn.

The team of Choice have collected three out of a possible 12 points since Maduka took charge.

The 51-year-old was asked by journalists after the 0-0 draw against Cape Town City on Tuesday night if he was starting to get worried about his job due to the lack of positive results.

“About what? What do you mean? We have not lost; we drew my brother. We are building a team and we know where we are going,” said a relaxed Maduka.

“We know what we want to achieve so for now there is no pressure so we don’t have to worry about anything. We just need to start winning games, that is the most important thing.”

On the season’s objectives and the quality of players at his disposal, the Malawian-born mentor said he was satisfied with what he has.

“I think we do have (quality), it’s just a matter of time like we said we are trying to build a new team. The players we are using most of them are new from different teams and you can see that we are getting better and better. We started (the season) badly but you can see that it’s coming alright the understanding is there, I mean this is the second game where we got a clean sheet and it’s good for us.

“We would love as a team to finish top 8 and we are still capable of doing so and we do have the players that are able to do that.”

Maritzburg will host Chippa United in their next match on Saturday, 20 August.
