How AmaZulu are approaching Chiefs clash

AmaZulu president Sandile Zungu has pointed out how AmaZulu are approaching their two-legged MTN8 semifinal tie against trophy-hungry Kaizer Chiefs.

Zungu believes the 2022/23 season will finally see a change in fortunes for the club, bringing a cup to a trophy cabinet that has not had silverware in 30 years.

Their first obstacle on this conquest will be the equally trophy-hungry Kaizer Chiefs, whom they meet in the two-legged semifinals of the MTN8.

WHAT ZUNGU HAD TO SAY

“AmaZulu has not won any significant trophy since 1992. You can imagine how important it would be to get that trophy.

“It would re-establish us as a trophy-winning team. I can’t wait to lift that cup.

“Kaizer Chiefs are playing beautiful football, we’re playing them [on Sunday], and we’re not approaching that game with anything other than total respect.

“They’re just as anxious as us to win something as us. They haven’t won in a long time. We consider it very important.

“It comes in the 90th year of the club; the last time we played in any final was in 2010—the first game of the newly built FNB before the World Cup,” he told FARPost.

While some might feel that Zungu’s confidence is foolhardy, it is backed by the good pre-season and transfer window that Usuthu enjoyed.

“We hired right; we went to the transfer market and got good players. We had a balanced team in mind from the backline up to the attackers.

“I think we are very proud of what we did in that department.

“We got accomplished strikers with a pedigree for winning and promising youngsters critical to our 2032 ambitions when we turn 100.

“We got players before pre-season, and most of the players went to pre-season with the team except Ramahlwe Mphahlele.

“The rest went to pre-season training with the team. We did that deliberately because we didn’t want to find ourselves in the last-minute rush for players,” he said.
