Steve Barker explains the reason behind Rayners’ superb form
Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has explained the reason behind Iqraam Rayners’ superb form in front of goal since his return to the club.
Rayners re-united with the Stellenbosch FC during the January transfer window after spending two seasons at Tshwane side SuperSport United.
The 27-year-old hit the ground running as he’s already the club’s top scorer. He has six goals in four matches to his name.
His latest goal came against Mamelodi Sundowns in a DStv Premiership clash on Sunday.
At SuperSport, he had an unsuccessful spell as in 58 matches in all competitions, Rayners scored five goals and provided 11 assists.
REASON BEHIND IQRAAM RAYNERS’ SUPERB
Barker believes that Rayners is comfortable and in an environment where he enjoys playing football.
“Rayners was here in the past and helped the club to get promoted [in 2019]. I think he’s comfortable here and it’s an environment he enjoys,” Barker told the club’s media department.
“He is the type of player who is not too structured and who doesn’t have too many defensive responsibilities.
“His ability is getting in behind and making forward runs so maybe giving him that freedom and giving him that bit of love and care [has got the best out of him].
“He’s got 42 goals in 85 matches for us which is a massive return. He only scored five times in 58 games for SuperSport United. For him to have six in four [since returning] is really good for him and really good for us.”
RAYNERS’ INFLUENCE
Barker further believes Rayners’ presence has helped in turning things around as they are yet to lose a match.
“To have a goalscorer come in and score goals for us has been key. We had been playing well in previous matches, but not taking our chances. I think that has helped us turn things around,” he added.
Stellenbosch turn focus to Nedbank Cup as they are on the road to face TS Galaxy in the last 16 on Sunday 12 March.
Kickoff at Mbombela Stadium is at 3pm.
