Why Mazibuko supports Swallows’ decision to continue with Musa Nyatama as coach

Swallows legend Goodman Mazibuko has revealed why he supports the club’s decision to continue with player-coach Musa Nyatama to lead the team.

The Soweto roped in Nyatama and opted against looking for an experienced coach after parting ways with Dylan Kerr in September.

Nyatama was not a qualified tactician when he took over as caretaker coach but he recently attended a CAF coaching course at SAFA Ekurhuleni.

Indications are that the former Orlando Pirates midfielder committed himself to learn about coaching during the 2022 Qatar FIFA World Cup break, and has already obtained the CAF C license coaching license.

In the four DStv Premiership matches with the inexperienced Nyatama in the hot seat, Swallows have managed to register one victory, and two draws and suffered one defeat.

Mazibuko believes it’s time for Nyatama to raise his hand and grab the opportunity with his both hands to coach in the highest level.

“I think he’s professional enough to lead the club. Me as a former player [of the club] I’m backing a former player. They [players] must get involved in football, they must get involved in South African coaching so that we grow,” Mazibuko told FARPost.

“I think right now he’s the right man [for the job]. He’s a former player, he knows what to do. Now he’s in the coaching department even though sometimes it is very difficult.

“We cannot every time look for a coach from the outside. This is the opportunity for a former player to raise their hand so that they can coach at the highest level.”

Nyatama has a lot of work to do at the club when the DStv Premiership resumes end of December after the FIFA World Cup break.

The Dube Birds are 14th on the log standings, two points ahead of bottom-placed Maritzburg United and Sekhukhune United in 15th spot.

Swallows’ first test post-World Cup will be a trick tie on the road as they travel to face newcomers Richards Bay on New Year’s Eve.
