What Souaibou Marou brings to Orlando Pirates

Cameroonian football experts have unpacked attributes which forward Souaibou Marou will bring to Orlando Pirates’ attack.

La VAR newspaper Editor-in-Chief, Andre Awoumou, of Cameroon said Souaibou Marou, who joined Pirates from Coton Sport will bring a big-match temperament to the DStv Premiership.

WHAT MAKES SOUAIBOU MAROU A BIG-GAME PLAYER

“It is a good deal for Orlando Pirates. If he is put in the good conditions, he will perform for the club. He is an international player,” Awoumou told FARPost.

“You know what it means to be the captain of Coton Sport; the biggest club in Cameroon,” Awoumou added.

“Being the captain of this team simply means you are a strong leader and you have character.

“He was the top scorer in the last two years with 39 goals; 21 last season and 18 this season.  In the last edition of the Confederation Cup, he scored four goals.”

“You can count on him in big games. In the play-off, he led Coton Sport to the championship. He scored one of the most beautiful goals ever. He scored in the semifinal of the play-off with a shot from 30metres,” Awoumou said.

WHY DSTV PREMIERSHIP SUITS MAROU’S PLAYING STYLE

The Cameroonian editor then explained why the DStv Premiership suits the Pirates new striker.

“Their play style in South Africa is almost the same like the philosophy in the North of Cameroon where Coton Sport are based.

“It is not very physical like that of the South of Cameron. They play football. They enjoy the game. The style is based on running, technical [ability] and intelligence.

“It is a good point of adaptation for the player to come to South Africa. It is a good choice for him to go to south Africa,” Awoumou concluded.

Another Cameroonian sports journalist, Sam Nick, described Souaibou Marou as a quality forward.

“Marou Souaibou is one of the young and talented Cameroonian players,” he told FARPost.

“He was elected the MVP of the last national league. He is speedy and focused and targeted to score goals.”

Cameroonian football website, Kick442, describes Marou as a top-class striker.

“The former Coton Sport skipper should prove to be an excellent signing for Pirates,” the website writes.

“…he is a top- class player who will bring a much-needed goal threat to the nine-time champions of the DStv Premiership for the rest of the season.”

Former Pirates brand and sponsorship manager Joseph Bertrand described the striker as a big addition to the Soweto outfit.

“A top, top attacking player if you ask anyone involved in Cameroonian football,” he tweeted.

“Hopefully, Souaibou Marou will adapt to the PSL and the country quickly so that he can be at his full potential.

“Not many African clubs can get players that were at the World Cup a few weeks ago.”

MAROU’S STATISTICS IN CAMEROON

The 22-year-old spent five seasons at Coton Sport, including with the youth team.

He scored 34 goals and provided 22 assists in 74 matches spread across three seasons with the senior team.

Souaibou Marou won two MTN Elite One championships with Coton Sport.

The 2022 Player of the Year for the Cameroonian league  has signed a two-year contract with the Soweto giants.

He is the second Cameroonian on the books of the Buccaneers after Eva Nga.
