Lyle Lakay reacts to Shandre Campbell’s idol remarks

Lyle Lakay of SuperSport United recently addressed comments made by teammate Shandre Campbell, where the rising star hailed the former Bafana Bafana international as his idol.

In an interview with this publication about a month ago, Campbell revealed that Lakay is his inspiration. The young player revealed that Lakay has been assisting him to adjust to the Matsatsantsa first team after his promotion from the reserve side [DStv Diski Challenge] this season.

Lakay is one of the senior players at SuperSport, whereas Campbell is new to the professional football scene and deemed a future star. Interestingly, the duo play on the left hand side, despite different roles.

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Lakay plays at the back, whilst Campbell plays an offensive role.

Lakay is humbled by Campbell’s idol comments as the two share a special relationship.

“I don’t know if he told you, but if you ask him again, I’m always on his case,” Lakay told FARPost. “I guide and try to help him because I was also on that spot.

“When I came to SuperSport, Clayton Daniels was my mentor, so I try to do the same for him. He’s a good kid with a bright future. This is something that I always tell him, ‘try to remain humble, keep your feet on the ground and work hard, then you’ll excel’.

“He’s my boy, whenever guys in the team need to speak to him or need something they say, ‘Lyle speak to your boy’.”

Lakay shares Hlompho Kekana’s view that Campbell has great potential to play in Europe in the future because of what he does on the pitch.

“I’ve heard people speaking about him, even Hlompho Kekana, my former teammate. I will reiterate his statement and say the same thing: he must go to Europe, with his talent, he must go to Europe,” he added.

The 18-year-old attacker has been turning heads this season for SuperSport. Blessed with a skilled left foot, Campbell has racked up impressive stats, featuring in 26 games across all competitions and contributing directly to goals with five goals scored and five assists provided.
