Lorch opens up on possibility of facing Pirates on his Sundowns debut

Highly-rated attacker Thembinkosi Lorch has opened up on the possibility of facing his former club, Orlando Pirates, on his Mamelodi Sundowns in a league clash this weekend.

Lorch, a popular figure among Pirates fans, completed his high-profile transfer to Sundowns on the January deadline day, becoming the club’s fourth signing of the window.

The two Gauteng rivals will battle it out for three points in the DStv Premiership on Saturday, 17 February, at Loftus Versfeld Stadium. Kickoff is at 20:00.

Lorch, nicknamed “Nyoso”, admitted that it will be very difficult to face Pirates if he does play. He’s emotionally connected with the Soweto giants after spending eight years at the club.

“It’s difficult to play my first game, especially against my former team, but in life, we need to move on,” said Lorch. “I’m hoping I will start over the weekend and do the best for my team.

“Everyone wants to play over the weekend because we are playing Pirates; it’s a big team. The coach [Rulani Mokwena] will decide who plays; it’s up to the coach.”

The talented attacker further paid tribute to Pirates chairman Dr Irvin Khoza for granting him the opportunity to wear the famous black and white colours of the Buccaneers.

“First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank my former team, Orlando Pirates, especially Dr Irvin Khoza, for giving me an opportunity to play for a club like Orlando Pirates.

“I remember I signed [for Pirates] when I was 22 years and I left when I was 30. I’m grateful for the opportunity he [Khoza] gave me. Pirates will always have a special place in my heart.

“Also, I would like to thank the president of Mamelodi Sundowns, Dr Patrice Motsepe, for believing in me and bringing me into this beautiful team.

“I’m looking forward to giving my best for this team [Sundowns]. I think the team welcomed me well, the spirit in the team is good,” added.
