Arthur Zwane’s verdict on Itumeleng Khune’s return between the sticks
Kaizer Chiefs mentor Arthur Zwane has given his verdict on the performance of the club’s veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.
Khune returned to Amakhosi’s starting eleven when they lost 2-1 to rivals Swallows FC in a DStv Premiership Soweto derby clash on Monday, 1 May 2023, at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.
The 35-year-old goal-minder played for the whole 90 minutes between the sticks for the Glamour Boys.
The last time Khune featured for Arthur Zwane’s side was when they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium in a league match in January 2023.
This season, Khune has featured in 12 games across all competitions, conceded 12 goals, and managed to keep two clean sheets in the process.
‘KHUNE DID BRILLIANTLY WELL’
‘10111’, as he is popularly known within the football circles, reckons that the highly-experienced shot-stopper performed well and believes that the defence let him down.
“I would say Khune did brilliantly well. He made some brilliant saves in the game,” Zwane told journalists in Polokwane.
“Unfortunately, he conceded two goals and when we concede is not ‘Itu’. The defence should have done better and the other players as well.
“We did not defend well, actually before the one that they scored, there is another one that he saved [close range].”
Zwane continued: “I think he [Khune] did fairly well. But collectively as a team, I think we should have done much better.”

Chiefs are left with two games to play this campaign, and they will be hoping to qualify for the CAF interclub competition.
The two remaining league fixtures will be against SuperSport United and Cape Town City.
Currently, Amakhosi sit fourth on the table with 44 points, five points behind second-placed rivals Orlando Pirates.
