Vusimuzi Vilakazi makes bold claim about co-coaching

Golden Arrows co-coach Vusimuzi Vilakazi has made a bold claim about his side’s co-coaching after he and his colleague Mabhuti Khenyeza finished their first season as joint head coaches.

The duo initially served as interim coaches when they took over in April last year following the sacking of Lehlohonolo Seema.

Seema was axed after his side’s record 6-0 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Vilakazi and Khenyeza oversaw six games before the end of the 2021/22 season. During the off-season, they were appointed as joint coaches permanently.

With clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Royal AM having dismantled their co-coaching systems, many have grown to dislike the method, beholding it as a road to ruin.

With Arrows’ one, Vilakazi thinks otherwise, he believes they are a “true reflection of co-coaching”. He says they have a good understanding because they have come a long way together.

Vilakazi and Khenyeza shared a dressing during their playing days at Abafana Bes’thende.

“We are very much comfortable with that [co-coaching],” said Vilakazi on Sports Night Amplified with Andile on Metro FM.

“I think I once said to someone that if you want to see or know the true reflection of co-coaching, it is with us, Mabhuti [Khenyeza] and me.

“Because that’s not something that started now for us to work together. When we were playing, we were staying together and we’ve got that understanding of each other.

“And we’re very much comfortable with the way we’re working right now.

“So, whether the management keeps that or they say one of us must [head coach], it doesn’t matter who, we will still work and be supportive to each other and give 100% because we are very much comfortable with each other.”

Under Vilakazi and Khenyeza, Arrows finished 9th on the log standings with 38 points after 30 games.
