Former Chiefs defender speaks on Billiat’s situation

A former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back opines that Khama Billiat should move on from Amakhosi if he no longer feels appreciated.

The former Zimbabwean defender believes that Billiat can last for two or more seasons but only in an environment where he is appreciated.

Khama Billiat joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2018 after an impressive rise from Ajax Cape Town and later Mamelodi Sundowns.

At Mamelodi Sundowns, the 32-year-old excelled under the tutelage of Pitso Mosimane, as they won accolade after accolade.

But donning the black and gold jersey, he was a pale shadow of himself. Billiat did not manage to win anything for the Naturena-based club.

After five years at the club, his contract expired at end of June, and he is yet to sign a new one. As a result questions have been asked.

And former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back, Thomas Sweswe believes a new environment could help him strike the right chords.

The former Chiefs defender agrees with Hlompho Kekana’s sentiments that moving might be the solution.

“In South Africa, it’s going be difficult for him because he hasn’t played enough football in the last three years,” said Kekana. “As a striker of Khama’s calibre, you’re only as good as your last match. You’ll be expected to score goals because you have shown us what you can do.

Khama Billiat and his management are yet to reveal their decision with regards to the Amakhosi offer.

But the Zimbabwean star has been linked with a move to either North Africa or the Middle East.

WHAT THOMAS SWESWE SAID

“At this very point, no one knows what is going through his mind regarding his future at the club,” said Sweswe.

“But for me, I cannot rule out a fresh start elsewhere. As a player, he wants to feel appreciated at every level.

“Taking a pay might not be a issue but there could be other factors in play. He is a top quality player, no doubt about that.

“I think he has more seasons to play top-quality football. But we all know, in football, form tends to change over time and that doesn’t take away the quality you have,” added the ex-Chiefs defender.

Khama Billiat’s agent Godfrey Bakasa has been mum about the player’s future at Amakhosi.

This is despite Kaizer Chiefs revelation that the player is yet to sign the new contract he was offered.
