25-year-old goalkeeper eyes Sundowns contract

A 25-year-old goalkeeper is training with Mamelodi Sundowns in the hope of securing a contract with the team.

Sundowns spent the past week in Rustenburg, where they played a number of friendly matches in preparation for the 2023/24 PSL season.

On Monday, the DStv Premiership champions jet off to the Netherlands, where they will continue to fine-tune their preps for their title defence.

SANELE TSHABALALA AIMING AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS CONTRACT

FARPost can reveal that Sanele Tshabalala has been training with the team during this pre-season. Tshabalala recently parted ways with Moroka Swallows following the expiry of his contract.

Following the arrival of Daniel Akpeyi at The Birds, Tshabalala was pushed down the pecking order at Swallows.

He only played three games last season in all competitions, with Thakasani Mbanjwa getting a fair share of action. Mbanjwa played 21 games in all competitions.

The former Bidvest Wits youth goalkeeper is reportedly impressing the Sundowns coaching staff. The former youth international is seen as a talented goalkeeper with good reflexes, shot-stopping and the ability to play out from the back.

Former Zambia international Kennedy Mweene recently announced his retirement, transitioning to a coaching role at the club.

STRENGTHENING THE SQUAD

With Denis Onyango, who is 38 years old, also at the twilight of his career, Sundowns could be looking to add a younger goalie.

Downs have several goalkeepers including Ronwen Williams, Riyaad Pieterse, Jody February and Ishmael Watenga.

Sundowns have been strengthening their squad ahead of the 2023/24 season. They have already signed a number of new players, including Brazilian striker Ribeiro Costa, Lesiba Nku and Junior Mendieta.

It is not yet clear whether Tshabalala, who was recently linked with TS Galaxy, will be offered a contract.
