AmaZulu FC decide against signing released Pirates midfielder

A recently released Orlando Pirates midfielder is continuing to search for a new club after AmaZulu FC decided against signing him.

The Pirates‘ busy transfer market saw them releasing a handful number of players, including Ntsako Makhubela, Craig Martin, Nkanyiso Zungu, Kopano Thuntsane, Tebogo Tlolane, Collins Makgaka and Ndumiso Mabena.

Meanwhile, they have also loaned out Bongani Sam, Tshegofatso Mabasa and Goodman Mosele.

One of the ditched midfielders, Makgaka, was training with Usuthu recently, trying his luck at the club under the watchful eye of Pablo Franco Martin.

However, it seems like things didn’t go according to plan for the 27-year-old as he has been let go of by the Durban-based club.

Makgaka parted ways with the Buccaneers at the end of the previous season, having failed to make a mark since joining from Baroka FC in 2020.

Thereafter, he spent some time with Stellenbosch FC during the early days of the pre-season, with the Cape Winelands side seeking Junior Mendieta’s replacement. However, he made no impression, as he left before the start of the season.

“Collins won’t join AmaZulu, it looks like he couldn’t impress the coach,” a source known to this publication said.

Makgaka made 24 appearances for Pirates in all competitions and rattled the back of the net on two occasions. He was part of the team that won the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup.

Meanwhile, other players who have been offered opportunities for try-outs at Usuthu are Tebogo Tlolane, Phumlani Ntshangase and Denwin Farmer. The versatile Tlolane was another player who left the Sea Robbers along with the likes of Makgaka two months ago.

Phumlani Ntshangase, on the other hand, has been without a club for a few months after ending the relationship with Baroka FC in April. He was training with Maritzburg United during the pre-season.

He also took part in the KZN Premier’s Cup in the Team of Choice’s colours. However, he didn’t sign on the dotted line.

Lastly, Farmer parted ways with Sekhukhune United in June, even though his contract was going to run out in 2024. And it’s still unclear what is Usuthu’s decision on him and other trialists.
