Eric Tinkler’s advice to Bartlett after seven DStv Prem successive defeats

Cape Town City coach Eric Tinkler has revealed what he told Shaun Bartlett after Cape Town Spurs’ seventh DStv Premiership successive defeat.

This comes after the Urban Warriors suffered a 3-1 loss to City in a DStv Premiership Cape Town derby this past Saturday at DHL Stadium.

Bartlett’s side are winless in seven league matches. In fact, Spurs are the first side in the PSL top-flight history to lose their seven season-opening games.

As a result, the Cape club remain at the bottom of the log standings without a point from seven outings.

ERIC TINKLER: ‘I REALLY FEEL FOR SHAUN’

Tinkler divulged what he advised Bartlett on after the Cape Town derby defeat and how he feels sorry for him [Shaun Bartlett].

The Citizens coach went on to reveal that the lack of experienced players within the Spurs squad is one of the factors that is letting them down.

“The way our league is set-up nowadays, you play every three days and it’s not easy. You got to have a good blend. I don’t like talking about other teams but I really feel for Shaun,” said Tinkler.

“But I think they needed to bring in a little bit of more experienced players to help Shaun because I think he is a good coach.

WHAT ERIC TINKLER TOLD SHAUN BARTLETT

“I spoke with him after the game. I said to him; ‘you know one thing, you must control what you can control which is your level of professionalism. What you do every day when you come to train your team. Continue with that belief that what you are doing is right’.

“The game of football can be very cruel, especially for coaches. So, I feel for him.”

The former Orlando Pirates coach continued: “I had a conversation the other night about what is happening at Barcelona and Ajax Amsterdam. They are sitting poorly in the league, and Barça now are under threat of having to close doors.

“It’s difficult for those teams to compete when you are just using youngsters. That’s just the fact you know. The development comes in phases, it doesn’t just happen.

“You go phases where a group of players come through and they are all talented and get integrated easily but there will be others who take time.”

Tinkler further stated that what makes it worse is that we are in a “business of now” [wanting immediate results].

“Unfortunately, we are in a business of now. We want results now. So, that’s one side of the game that’s has changed in my opinion and it’s just sad,” he added.
