CT City bolster squad by signing ex-Leicester City midfielder Leshabela

DStv Premiership side Cape Town City FC have bolstered their squad by signing former Leicester City midfielder Khanya Leshabela.

The club announced the arrival of Leshabela via their official social media accounts on Monday, 19 February. The midfielder is CT City’s first signing after the January transfer window, as the club is in full gear for the second round of the 2023/24 PSL season.

Previously, the Citizens had initially agreed to sign Namibian star Prins Tjiueza; however, the deal didn’t materialise after a failed medical due to an injury.

The 24-year-old Leshabela has been training with CT City for the past few weeks. He has been without a club after parting ways with the Foxes at the end of the 2022/23 season. His debut for the Leicester City first team was in the 2021/22 season, against Sheffield United.

The former SA Under-20 midfielder once played for Shrewsbury and Crewe Alexanda respectively on loan in the lower leagues in England. Last campaign, he played in the English Premier League 2 and made nine appearances.

“The club is delighted to confirm the signing of Khanya Leshabela. The 24-year-old South African midfielder joins the Citizens as Coach Eric [Tinkler] looks to bolster his squad for the season ahead!” City posted on their social media accounts.

The midfielder will face stiff competition for a place in the starting line-up. The Cape Town outfit has players like Thabo Nodada, Taahir Goedeman, Luyolo Slatsha and Luphumlo Sifumba in that central midfield position.

Leshabela is likely to make his CT City debut on Tuesday, 20 February. The Capetonians will take on SuperSport United in the Nedbank Cup Round of 32 at Lucas Moripe Stadium. Kickoff is at 19:00.
