Chiefs rocked by absence of three key players ahead crucial PLK City clash

Kaizer Chiefs have been rocked by the absence of three key players ahead of their crucial DStv Premiership clash against Polokwane City FC on Saturday at FNB Stadium.

The Glamour Boys will be looking to return to winning ways against Rise and Shine after playing out to a 1-1 draw against AmaZulu FC last Sunday away from home.

Chiefs are winless in their last three league games, which left their ambitions of finishing in the top eight hanging in the balance. They suffered a humiliating 5-1 loss against Mamelodi Sundowns two weeks ago before playing two successive draws with TS Galaxy and AmaZulu.

The Soweto giants are currently sitting eighth on the league table with 35 points in 28 matches, and they are level on points with Polokwane City, who are positioned ninth.

With Amakhosi desperate for a win to solidify their place in the top eight to qualify for next season’s MTN8, they will be missing Pule Mmodi, Edmilson Dove and Brandon Petersen.

Petersen received a red card while sitting on the bench against Galaxy last Wednesday while Dove was shown a second yellow card in the same match at Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Meanwhile, Mmodi accumulated his fourth yellow card of the season, and he will serve a one-match suspension.

The talented attacker has been a regular starter for Chiefs since joining the club from Golden Arrows in July 2023. Mmodi had featured in 31 matches across all competitions, scoring four goals and providing four assists.

On the other hand, Dove has played 18 games this season, while Petersen has 11 games under his belt. The 29-year-old shot-stopper has been starting on the bench in recent matches, with Bruce Bvuma preferred as the first-choice goalie.

Other teams missing players due to suspensions in the penultimate round of the league are Polokwane City, who will be without Manuel Kambala; SuperSport United will miss Shandre Campbell while Cape Town Spurs, AmaZulu, Richards Bay and Royal AM will miss Gadiel Gamangi, Riaan Hanamub, Thabani Dube and Kabelo Mahlasela respectively.
