Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Samkelo Zwane has spoken about the players having discussed using the Nedbank Cup as a big opportunity to end the trophy drought.

The Soweto giants are a win away from winning their first trophy since 2015 after they beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup semi-final on Sunday in Pretoria.

They will now face rivals Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, 10 May in the much-anticipated final.

The progression to the final has brought some hope to the Amakhosi faithful, who are yet to celebrate a cup triumph in almost a decade with their last final coming back in 2019, which was also in the Nedbank.

WHY THE NEDBANK CUP IS A PERFECT OPPORTUNITY TO END TROPHY DROUGHT

“That’s part of [our plans]. We also spoke about it in our players meeting,” said Zwane.

“The situation might look bad right now but it’s actually an opportunity to change things, to make history. Imagine us after 10 years we are the ones that win a trophy at Kaizer Chiefs. That would be a great thing to achieve as a player.”

SAMKELO ZWANE SAYS KAIZER CHIEFS PLAYERS UNDERSTAND WHAT THEY NEED TO DO ABOUT LOG POSITION

The 23-year-old says as players, they have also discussed their current log standings. Chiefs are currently eighth on the Betway Premiership log with six matches to go.

After failing to qualify for the MTN8 last season, the Soweto giants will be looking to avoid failing to make the competition for two seasons in a row.

“We have discussions of where we are on the table as players. We all understand what we need to do. But right now, we are taking one game at a time.”

Chiefs’ last six matches of the season include the Soweto Derby against Orlando Pirates and a tricky clash against unpredictable Polokwane City FC in their last match of the season. They will travel to Chippa United in their next league clash on Saturday.
