AEL Limassol keen on keeping Maseko as Bafana star makes up his mind on Sundowns future

Cypriot top-flight league side AEL Limassol are keen on continuing with Thapelo Maseko after the Mamelodi Sundowns winger impressed during his loan stint at the club.

The 22-year-old spent the second half of the 2025/26 season on loan at AEL Limassol after struggling for game time at Masandawana under coach Miguel Cardoso. The former SuperSport United star even ranted on social media, expressing frustration over a lack of playing time at Chloorkop.

A loan transfer to Cyprus was then sealed in January, and the attacker immediately turned himself into a regular at AEL Limassol, who are also home to his compatriot Luther Singh. With coach Hugo Martins having shown trust in Maseko, the Bafana Bafana star scored two goals and provided one assist in 15 games across all competitions.

FARPost understands that his performances impressed Martins, who now wants him beyond the expiration of his loan contract at the end of June. The loan spell in Cyprus helped Maseko reclaim his Bafana spot after a lengthy period of being frozen out.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS HOLD THE KEYS TO THAPELO MASEKO’S FUTURE IN EUROPE

With AEL Limassol intending to keep Maseko following the end of his loan stay at the club, this, however, depends on Sundowns’ willingness to transfer him permanently or to complete another loan deal. Cardoso has not been an admirer of the speedy wideman, and that could work in AEL Limassol’s favour.

But Maseko could change the Portuguese coach’s perception of him should he deliver five-star performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he is on duty with Bafana, having arrived in Mexico on Tuesday. However, FARPost is reliably informed that the player has no interest in returning to Sundowns and wants out of Chloorkop.

Although yet to hand in a transfer request, Maseko has made up his mind and does not see his future with the Brazilians. Should AEL Limassol officially table an offer for Sundowns, the player would be hoping the Tshwane giants will agree to a permanent transfer to sail through.
