Kaizer Chiefs have officially confirmed that the talented defender Aden McCarthy has completed his move to Azerbaijan-based outfit Sabah FK

The 22-year-old’s departure marks the end of a remarkable homegrown journey, transitioning from Naturena’s youth structures to securing a dream move to Europe.

McCarthy enters the next chapter of his career on the back of an exceptional breakthrough season with Amakhosi. In what was his first full campaign with the senior team, the versatile defender became a valuable asset, making 33 appearances across all competitions for the Soweto giants.

Aside from his defensive duties, McCarthy proved to be a threat in the opposition box, finding the back of the net twice.

His consistent performances were pivotal in helping the Glamour Boys secure a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership, successfully clinching qualification for the CAF Confederation Cup.

RISING THROUGH THE KAIZER RANKS RANKS

McCarthy’s journey with the Amakhosi began as a young teenager in the club’s development divisions.

Aden, who is the son of the club’s legend, Fabian McCarthy, steadily climbed the ranks, most notably in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC].

His satisfying displays in the reserve league earned him a deserved first-team debut toward the end of the 2024/25 season, before he firmly cemented his place in the starting line-up last term.

WHAT KAIZER MOTAUNG JR SAID ABOUT ADEN MCCARTHY’S MOVE

Speaking on the club’s official platforms, Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr expressed pride in seeing another academy product make a move to Europe, confirming that the club chose not to stand in the player’s way.

“We can confirm that we have agreed to release Aden after being approached by Sabah FK,” said Motaung Jr.

“We are proud that he will compete in the qualifying round of next season’s UEFA Champions League. So, we know Aden will fly the Amakhosi flag high in Europe, and we are excited to see him grow on the world stage.”

McCarthy’s new side, Sabah FK, will provide the South African rising star with an immediate taste of continental football as they prepare for their upcoming UEFA Champions League qualifying campaign after winning the Azerbaijani domestic league.
