Former Mamelodi Sundowns Head of Physical Performance, Mathias Zangenberg, has resurfaced at Danish Superliga side Brondby IF, after recently leaving the Brazilians.
The 47-year-old has been appointed Brondby’s physical coach after opting to return to his home country. Announcing his departure from Sundowns two weeks ago, Zangenberg bowed out after three years at Chloorkop, where he worked under Rulani Mokwena and then Miguel Cardoso.
At Masandawana, he was the Head of Physical Performance, working across the club with the first team, ladies’ side and academy teams. He is back in his home country after helping Sundowns win the CAF Champions League for the first time since 2016.
Lifting two Betway Premiership titles, the African Football League [AFL] crown and participation at the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup also marked his time with Masandawana. Making his CV glowing before joining Sundowns was his stint as Ghana’s physical trainer at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Also spells at Superliga sides FC Nordsjælland and Aarhus GF as Head of Physical Performance helped him gain some experience.
MATHIAS ZANGENBERG’S EXPERIENCE FROM MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
“It’s a super cool project that I’m really looking forward to being a part of. I grew up with Brondby IF being the team, and I’ve supported the club myself,” said Zangenberg after he was unveiled by Brondby on Thursday.
“I know the history and culture of hard work, as well as a team with a lot of intensity, forward-thinking and dynamic football. I bring experience from very different environments in both Danish and international football.
“At FC Nordsjælland, we worked purposefully to strengthen the connection between the academy and the first team, while at AGF, I became part of a club with a large fan base and a potential that we worked to unlock, which they then achieved last season.
“Most recently, I have been part of Mamelodi Sundowns, where the goal is to win the championship and compete for the CAF Champions League every single year. So there are many different experiences that I am looking forward to bringing into the work at Brondby IF.”
