Stellenbosch FC welcome former Orlando Pirates right-back Thabiso Lebitso

Stellenbosch FC have unveiled former Orlando Pirates right-back Thabiso Lebitso, stepping up their robust preparations for the highly-anticipated 2026/27 season.

Lebitso has signed with Stellies in a swap deal that saw Pirates secure the talented midfielder Mthetheleli Mthiyane, who enjoyed a breakout season in SA’s top flight in the previous campaign.

The 34-year-old has officially parted ways with the Soweto giants to kickstart a new chapter in his career, joining Stellenbosch under the guidance of the highly experienced Gavin Hunt. Lebitso spent two-and-a-half seasons at Pirates after making the switch from Chippa United in January 2024.

Though he arrived at the club as a relatively unknown player, he quickly defied expectations to play a pivotal role in the Buccaneers’ recent dominance. He leaves Mayfair decorated with an impressive haul of silverware, including two MTN8 titles, a Carling Knockout Cup, a Nedbank Cup, and a Betway Premiership winner’s medal.

In total, the versatile defender made 27 appearances across all competitions for the Bucs. His most memorable moment in a Pirates jersey came in March 2024, when he scored a stunning goal in the fierce Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

However, after a highly promising start to life in Johannesburg, Lebitso’s game time became increasingly restricted due to persistent injuries and fierce competition for the right-back spot.

In the previous campaign, Lebitso struggled to find regular playing minutes, with Kamogelo Sebelebele often preferred in the starting lineup ahead of other notable names like Deano Van Rooyen and Bandile Shandu—the latter of whom has also parted ways with Pirates following the expiry of his contract.

With the 2026/27 season scheduled to kick off on the first weekend of August, the Winelands-based side moved swiftly to unveil Lebitso as their marquee signing to beef up the squad.

“Stellenbosch Football Club is delighted to announce the acquisition of Thabiso Lebitso on a permanent transfer from Orlando Pirates,” the club confirmed in an official statement on their website, noting that he has signed a long-term deal.

Stellenbosch FC CEO Rob Benadie expressed his excitement over the new signing, highlighting the depth Lebitso brings to the Cape.

“We are pleased to welcome Thabiso to the Cape Winelands,” said Benadie. “He is a player who has consistently demonstrated his quality at the highest level of South African football and brings a valuable mix of experience and versatility to our squad.

“As a club, we continuously aim to improve and compete at the highest level, and the addition of a player of Thabiso’s calibre strongly reflects that ambition.”
