Kaizer Chiefs retain Pule Mmodi for another season

FARPost understands that Kaizer Chiefs recently exercised the one-year option in Pule Mmodi’s contract, ensuring the winger remains with the club for the 2026/27 campaign.

Mmodi enters his fourth season with Amakhosi after joining the club on a free transfer from Golden Arrows. There had been uncertainty over his future after the 33-year-old attacker endured a frustrating season, struggling to secure a regular starting place.

The Free State-born winger managed just one goal, the winner against Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership, and one assist in 25 appearances across all competitions.

Despite those modest returns, the Soweto giants have kept faith in the former Arrows attacker, handing him another season to fight for his place.

Since arriving at Naturena in 2023, Mmodi has made 86 appearances for Amakhosi across all competitions, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists. The extension brings clarity to the pacy winger’s future after questions were raised over his contractual status following the expiry of his initial deal on 30 June.

The decision also explains why Mmodi travelled with the squad to Spain for their pre-season training camp, where new head coach Fernando Da Cruz is assessing his options ahead of the new campaign.

Although Mmodi has been retained, Chiefs’ attack could still undergo significant changes before the transfer window closes. FARPost reported that Congolese winger Glody Lilepo is attracting strong interest from North African clubs, with two clubs already having submitted offers. Should Lilepo complete a move, Mmodi’s experience would provide valuable cover in attack.

The club is expected to continue reshaping its options on the flanks. Asanele Velebayi is poised to play a far more prominent role in his second season at the club, having shown glimpses of his potential in his debut campaign. The former Cape Town Spurs winger is expected to feature more regularly on the left wing under Da Cruz.

At the same time, Chiefs have not given up on their pursuit of Stellenbosch FC winger Langelihle Phili. FARPost understands that Amakhosi remain keen on the highly rated attacker, despite Stellies having previously rejected their approaches and continuing to stand firm on their valuation.

With pre-season preparations in Spain ongoing, Chiefs are expected to remain active in the transfer market as they fine-tune their squad ahead of the 2026/27 season.
