Milford FC’s latest signing, Thabang Mabena, has explained why Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder Themba Zwane remains his biggest inspiration.
Mabena recently completed a move to the newly promoted Betway Premiership side Milford FC. Mabena joined the KwaZulu-Natal side after spending three seasons at Black Leopards.
But following Leopards’ demotion to the SAFA ABC Motsepe League at the end of last season, the former Dondol star was snapped up by Milford. Mabena made a name for himself during the 2023 Nedbank Cup, where his then team, Dondol, were eliminated in the quarter-finals by Orlando Pirates.
Speaking during Milford’s pre-season camp at the Ranch hotel in Polokwane on Thursday, Mabena spoke of how he has always admired Zwane’s discipline, who he says always stays away from trouble.

Having graced the top flight for over 14 years, the 36-year-old Zwane is a shining example of longevity and professionalism. Known for his quiet and reserved demeanour, he has maintained an immaculate disciplinary record both on and off the pitch.
His highly decorated career includes winning two CAF Champions League titles with Sundowns and, most recently, representing Bafana Bafana on the global stage at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
“Themba Zwane, he is one player that I look up to, especially his lifestyle,” Mabena told journalists. “He is someone that you don’t just find in unnecessary things you see. He is someone who stays away from girls and drugs, all those things.
“So he is someone that I look up to, and I am happy that I will have a chance to play against him and learn what I can from him,” he added.

Mabena couldn’t hide his excitement about the opportunity of playing in the top-flight for the first time in his career.
“Obviously, playing in the PSL is something that every player wants, especially when growing up. But I would love to see myself playing overseas and achieving more.
“Where I am, I am extremely happy. The way they [Milford] have welcomed me at the club, the players, and the chairman [Dr Xanti Pupuma]. Everyone here has welcomed me with both hands. So I feel there will be a trophy that we will bring home this season, and we will compete in the league. So it’s time that we get to the ground and showcase our talent.”
