Newly signed Sekhukhune United goalkeeper Melusi Buthelezi has lifted the lid on his sudden exit from Orlando Pirates, admitting he was caught off guard by the timing of his departure just hours before the Buccaneers jetted off to Spain.
The 28-year-old shot-stopper completed a permanent move to Babina Noko following a three-year spell in Soweto, where he served primarily as cover for Bafana Bafana goalie Sipho Chaine.
During his time at the reigning Betway Premiership champions, Buthelezi made 22 appearances across all competitions, registering 12 clean sheets and helping the side secure domestic cup silverware.
The 28-year-old has now joined Sekhukhune after the departure of Renaldo Leaner, who has left the club on a free transfer to join Kaizer Chiefs.
As previously reported by FARPost, Buthelezi completes his move to Sekhukhune despite the Soweto giants having recently triggered a one-year extension on his contract. However, after Babina Noko identified the shot-stopper as the ideal replacement for Leaner, both clubs agreed on a deal.

Speaking at the inaugural Mafori Cup press conference in Polokwane on Friday, the 28-year-old opened up about his sudden transfer, admitting he was caught off guard by the timing of his departure.
“The only thing that I can say is that I got a call from the office [at Orlando Pirates] and they explained that there will be this move [to Sekhukhune],” said Buthelezi.
“I was surprised because it was the day before Pirates travelled to Spain [for pre-season]. So it was a surprise for me, but I am happy to be here [at Sekhukhune]. So I feel this move means a lot for me to also make a mark, you see. I am referring to game time.
“It’s up to me to work hard and make sure that I play. I can’t say it’s guaranteed that I will play regularly. Everything will depend on how I work.
“I had a good time at Pirates, I don’t want to lie to you. The first time I won a trophy was at Pirates. So I had a good time at Pirates. It was a good three years. I don’t want to lie. So I think I achieved my dreams, like any player who would want to win cups. So my dream came true.”
