Newly-signed Orlando Pirates striker Sebastian Pedersen has admitted that he first hesitated about joining the Buccaneers, but the transfer to the Soweto giants ended up as one he could not wait to seal.
Pirates announced the 27-year-old as their new player on Sunday in a surprise transfer. The former Norway youth international arrives at Pirates from his home country, where he was turning out for second-tier side Sogndal FC after one and a half seasons at the club.
He is the Buccaneers’ first striker signing this transfer window after the club roped in left-backs Neo Rapoo and Aphiwe Baliti as well as attackers Ghampani Lungu and Bohlale Ngwato. The Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has also signed midfielders Mthetheleli Mthiyane and Matome Mmolai.
Now, Pedersen adds to Ouaddou’s number nine options, joining the likes of Evidence Makgopa, Yanela Mbuthuma and Boitumelo Radiopane upfront. This comes as Pirates are in search of some attacking bite on both the domestic front in which they are Betway Premiership title defending champions, and the CAF Champions League.
Scrutiny is stern on Ouaddou to see if he managed to score a transfer hit on the Norwegian after Pirates strikers struggled for goals last season.

“This feels like a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. It is such a huge club that I couldn’t pass up the chance when it arose,” Pedersen was quoted as saying on the Sogndal website on Monday.
“At first, I was a bit sceptical, but the more I’ve learned about the club and life in South Africa, the more excited I’ve become. I am very grateful that Sogndal reached an agreement with Orlando Pirates.
“I’ve had an incredible time at Sogndal. I felt welcome from the very first second, and the local community embraced me. It has been a fantastic place to be, both on and off the pitch. I’m left with many great memories and am grateful for my time here.”
Pedersen is a former Norway youth international teammate of Manchester City FC striker Erling Haaland. He arrives in the Betway Premiership after his country captured hearts with a decent outing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup where they made history by reaching the quarter-finals.
WHY SOGNDAL FC SOLD SEBASTIAN PEDERSEN TO ORLANDO PIRATES
Sogndal head of player logistics Havard Flo has made a statement that suggests that they sold Pedersen to Pirates due to the club facing some financial challenges.
“This is a great opportunity for Sebastian. He expressed that this was an exciting step he wanted to take, provided we could find a solution that worked for all parties. At the same time, Sogndal needs to focus on its finances, and we are a club that develops and sells players on,” Flo said.
“It is sad to lose Sebastian. He is a fantastic guy and has been a key contributor since arriving at the club. He has performed well on the pitch and been an important figure in the dressing room.”
‘REPLACING PEDERSEN WILL BE DIFFICULT’
The transfer of Pedersen to Pirates is viewed as a Sogndal milestone of sending a player overseas, and the club says they might not be able to get his replacement in the near future.
“We know we’re exposing ourselves to a certain level of vulnerability by selling Sebastian now, but that’s part of football. We have to view this as a positive challenge. Replacing him in the short term will be difficult, but we’ll work on replicating his qualities or recruiting new players for this role,” added Flo.
“We are completing another international transfer. It is certainly a feather in the cap for all of us at Sogndal. Orlando Pirates is a major club and a top side in South Africa. This also sends a signal to players out there that Sogndal is a place that creates opportunities.
“We want to develop players so they can take the next steps in their careers. When players are sold to international clubs, it demonstrates that the work being done at Sogndal is of a high standard.”
