Young Africans have confirmed the signing of defender Oumar Farouk Komara from Golden Arrows, with the Ivorian reuniting with coach Manqoba Mngqithi in Tanzania.
Mngqithi is building his Young Africans squad after recently taking over as head coach of the Tanzanian giants. He has now roped in 25-year-old Komara, whom he signed at Golden Arrows from Ivorian side FC San Fedro.
The central defender spent just a season at Abafana Bes’thende and joins, through the Golden Arrows exit door, compatriot Isaac Cisse, who has penned a deal with Belgian top-flight league outfit Royal Charleroi SC.
Another Ivorian and last season’s Betway Premiership top goal-scorer, Junior Dion, has been pushing for a move away from the Durban side. Komara made 19 appearances across all competitions for Arrows last season, including 15 starts.
HIGH EXPECTATIONS ON MANQOBA MNGQITHI AT YOUNG AFRICANS
In his first coaching job outside South Africa, Mngqithi has arrived at a club where he is pressed to maintain standards set by his predecessors. He joined a team that has won five Tanzanian Premier League titles consecutively in the last five seasons.
They are the most successful club in the East African country with a total of 32 league titles. Apart from helping Yanga continue with their domestic dominance, Mngqithi’s other test will be in the CAF Champions League.
The Tanzanian heavyweights are pushing to be crowned African champions for the first time in their history. That has seen them make big signings from across the continent over the years, but the Champions League has been eluding them.
Mngqithi will be hoping that Komara and another Yanga signing, former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Peter Shalulile, will add depth and quality to his squad in their quest for domestic and continental glory. Senegalese forward Cheikh Toure has been signed from Saudi side Al Jabalain, having also previously played for AS Nancy in France.
