Orlando Pirates legend Eugene Zwane has explained why he believes that AmaZulu FC could be the surprise package of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership campaign under the guidance of head coach Arthur Zwane.
Usuthu have enjoyed a promising start to the new league season, collecting seven points from their opening three fixtures.
The KwaZulu-Natal side kicked off their campaign with a 1-0 victory over Stellenbosch FC, followed by a 1-1 draw against defending champions Pirates, before securing a 2-0 win over Siwelele FC.
Their early-season form leaves them sitting fourth on the Betway Premiership table, level on points with top-three sides Pirates, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mamelodi Sundowns, separated only by goal difference.
Despite their dramatic 4-3 extra-time exit to Sekhukhune United in the MTN8 quarter-finals, Usuthu have maintained an impressive run of form in the Betway Premiership.
‘HE’S A VERY STRATEGIC COACH’- EUGENE ZWANE ON ARTHUR ZWANE

Speaking to FARPost, the former Buccaneers midfielder praised coach Arthur Zwane’s tactical approach and the club’s transfer window strategy.
AmaZulu have bolstered their squad with the likes of Omega Mdaka, Khomotjo Lekoloane, Keenan Phillips, Gape Moralo, Faveur Kouassi, Moses Shumah, Siphesihle Maduna, and Neo Mokoena.
“You know, the dark horse is going to be AmaZulu, hey. I think coach Arthur Zwane has proven to me that he’s a very strategic coach,” Zwane told FARPost. “They had some great transfer market activity this season, with a limited budget. I believe he has found some good players to help the team achieve greater things. He’s definitely building a strong team.”
The retired legend is confident Usuthu have the quality and technical leadership to challenge the league’s heavyweights and secure a continental spot by the end of the term.
“I can almost guarantee that they will be able to get a top three finish this season under his [Zwane] leadership,” he added.
