Marumo Gallants goalkeeper Emile Lako has earned a surprise call-up to the Cameroon national team for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations [AFCON] qualifiers.
The 27-year-old Douala-born shot-stopper gets recognition on the international stage following his recent move to the Betway Premiership side, Marumo Gallants.
Lako signed for the North West-based club in July this year, following his stint with the Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit Real Native FC [previously known as Casric Stars FC].
So far, Lako has participated in three Betway Premiership matches in Gallants’ colours this season. He conceded seven goals, and he’s yet to keep a clean sheet.
This call-up comes as a surprise, given Gallants’ slow start to the new campaign. The Abram Sello-owned side has yet to record a win in its opening five matches, drawing two and losing three.
As a result, the Phuti Mohafe-led club currently sits 15th on the Betway Premiership table with just two points.
DREAM CALL-UP FOR EMILE LAKO
Lako’s inclusion in the Indomitable Lions squad comes as a major boost in his professional career. He recently completed a transfer to Bahlabane Ba Ntwa.
The goalkeeper has impressed technical selectors enough to earn a spot in the Cameroon squad despite Gallants’ poor start in the new campaign.
Cameroon are set to begin the 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign with two fixtures this month. The Indomitable Lions will host Comoros in their opening match on September 24, 2026, before travelling to face Congo on September 29, 2026.
Meanwhile, Gallants will be eager to see their international recruit gain valuable exposure during the FIFA window before returning to domestic duty in the South African top flight, because it will add valuable experience to the dressing room as Gallants aims to turn things around.
His agent, Joel DEUGOUE Youaleu of Haut-Nkam Football Agency, described the call-up as a significant moment in the goalie’s career. “We are extremely proud of Emile. This call-up is a significant moment in his career and recognition of the hard work he has put in over the years. His move to the Betway Premiership has given him a bigger platform, and it is encouraging to see the Cameroon technical team taking notice.
“It has not been the easiest start for Marumo Gallants, but Emile has shown his quality, character and professionalism. He now has the opportunity to compete at international level, learn from the experience and demonstrate what he can offer Cameroon.”
