Namibian side African Stars SC have issued an update on the confusion over the venue for their match against reigning Betway Premiership champions Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League second preliminary round.
African Stars have set a date with Pirates in the Champions League after most recently brushing aside AS Megasport in the first preliminary round in Atteridgeville.
In the match against Megasport, African Stars hosted their home leg in South Africa at the Lucas Moripe Stadium, as Namibia doesn’t have a stadium that meets the standards for hosting CAF matches.
On the other hand, Pirates secured their place in the second round of the Champions League after defeating La Cure Waves SC 3-1 over two legs in the first preliminary round.
The South African champions have publicly made their ambitions clear to chase glory in the Champions League this season.
Pirates are also looking to avoid last season’s heartbreak, which saw them crashing out of the second preliminary round against FC Saint-Eloi Lupopo after falling short on penalties.
AFRICAN STARS WILL LOCK HORNS WITH PIRATES AT BOTSWANA NATIONAL STADIUM
With Pirates gunning for knockout-stage qualification, they will have to overcome the tricky African Stars over two legs.
After African Stars staged their match in South Africa, questions arose about where the club will face Pirates, with several reports claiming the two sides could lock horns at Lucas Moripe Stadium.
African Stars have come out to dispel the rumours about where they’ll face Orlando Pirates, confirming that Botswana National Stadium will host their home match.
“The venue is confirmed: Stars will face Orlando Pirates at the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone, Botswana,” the club said on X [Twitter]. “Saturday, 17 October, Botswana National Stadium, Gaborone, 15:00 Namibian time.”
