Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club are in advanced talks with former Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi, with a potential appointment hinging on resolving current coach Paulo Sérgio’s contract.

FARPost has been informed that both parties are keen on the move, with discussions already covering Nabi’s contract terms and proposed technical team.

Wydad are understood to be negotiating Sérgio’s departure. There is an expectation that the matter could be resolved within days, although no firm timeline has been established.

The Casablanca club’s hierarchy met the Portuguese coach on Monday to discuss the technical team’s future following an unconvincing start to the season. Talks were expected to explore a possible mutual separation after a 1-1 draw with Amal Tiznit in the fourth game of the season left the side winless in three consecutive matches at the Mohammed V Sports Complex.

While reports have placed Nabi among the candidates under consideration, information gathered by this publication indicates that discussions have progressed beyond an initial expression of interest.

Sérgio has come under increasing pressure after collecting five points from four league matches. One victory, two draws and one defeat have left Wydad ninth in the standings, with supporters’ calls for his dismissal intensifying.

Nabi would bring previous experience of Botola Pro football, having coached AS FAR Rabat before joining Chiefs. He subsequently returned to Morocco to take charge of Wydad’s Casablanca rivals, Raja.

A move to Wydad would place him at another of the country’s leading clubs, with the immediate challenge of improving results and restoring supporters’ confidence. His stint with AS FAR saw him guide the army side to a second-place finish and reach the Throne Cup final.

The Tunisian spent just over two months at Raja in his first coaching role after leaving Kaizer Chiefs in October 2025. After replacing Fadlu Davids, he led the Green Eagles to four wins, two draws and one defeat in their final seven league matches last season.

Raja finished third in the Botola Pro League, securing CAF Confederation Cup qualification and missing out on a Champions League place by just one point behind second-placed RS Berkane.

However, Nabi departed during preparations for the 2026/27 campaign following disagreements over player recruitment. The Nedbank Cup-winning coach tried to sign former Mamelodi Sundowns duo Peter Shalulile and Thapelo Maseko but was reportedly frustrated by a lack of support from the club’s hierarchy.
