Orlando Pirates climbed to the top of the Betway Premiership with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Kaizer Chiefs in a thrilling Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The highly anticipated encounter at the Calabash lived up to its billing, with Yanela Mbuthuma putting the Sea Robbers ahead in the 24th minute before Pule Mmodi levelled terms in the 30th minute. Tshepang Moremi netted the winner in the 55th minute, handing Chiefs their first defeat of the season in the Betway Premiership.
Here are the nine key talking points from the high-stakes Soweto Derby clash.
1. KAIZER CHIEFS MAKE ONE CHANGE TO THE STARTING XI
Coach Fernando Da Cruz opted for continuity, making only one adjustment from Tuesday’s line-up. Inacio Miguel returned to central defence, replacing Rushwin Dortley.
Dortley had recently ended an 18-month injury spell when he started in Amakhosi’s 3-0 Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 victory over TS Galaxy. The 24-year-old centre-back, sidelined since March 2025 with a severe knee injury that required surgery, put in a solid performance in the midweek fixture to help keep a clean sheet.
2. ORLANDO PIRATES’ TACTICAL SHIFT DROPS BULELANI SIGOMOSHE TO THE BENCH
Buccaneers head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou made a notable tactical adjustment. He opted to deploy Deon Hotto on the right flank while placing Nkosikhona Ndaba on the left side, a position typically occupied by Hotto. This change saw Bulelani Sigomoshe drop to the substitutes’ bench.
3. SIPHO CHAINE’S COSTLY MISJUDGMENT
Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine suffered a momentary lapse in concentration during the first half. Chaine took his eyes off the ball, leading to an unforced error that allowed Chiefs’ Pule Mmodi to capitalise and slot in the equaliser.
However, the Bafana Bafana international redeemed himself to ensure his side walked away victorious.
4. MFUNDO VILAKAZI SHINES FOR AMAKHOSI
Young winger Mfundo ‘Obrigado’ Vilakazi delivered a lively performance after starting on the right wing for Chiefs. The South African youth international brought composure, flair, and high energy to Amakhosi’s attack, providing a constant threat—particularly throughout the opening half.
5. REEVE FROSLER SUFFERS INJURY IN SOWETO DERBY
Chiefs defender Reeve Frosler started the Soweto Derby for Chiefs, but was later substituted off due to an injury. Zitha Kwinika replaced Frosler in the 69th minute.

6. INÁCIO MIGUEL RECEIVE RED CARD
In stoppage time of the second half, Chiefs defender Inácio Miguel was sent off for receiving two yellow cards, prompting an early shower. This left Amakhosi with one man down, and they couldn’t do anything to turn the result around and find a late equaliser.
7. SOWETO DERBY HEAD-TO-HEAD RECORD
Saturday’s encounter marked the 186th official meeting between the two Soweto giants. Chiefs have claimed 75 victories, Pirates have secured 51 wins, and 55 matches have ended in draws. Meanwhile, five Soweto Derby matches between Chiefs and Pirates have been abandoned over the decades.
8. ORLANDO PIRATES LEAPFROG MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
This victory saw Pirates leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns on top of the Betway Premiership table with 25 points after nine outings. Masandawana are now second with 23 points; however, the Miguel Cardoso-led side plays Durban City FC tonight and could return to the top of the table.
9. A SOLD-OUT ELECTRIC AFFAIR AT FNB STADIUM
Underlining the massive interest in South African football’s Betway Premiership fixture, all 87,436 public tickets were sold out within just six hours on the day they went on sale, Wednesday, 14 October 2026.
The roaring, capacity crowd created a vibrant atmosphere at the Calabash, providing a fitting environment for the blockbuster clash.
