‘Be realistic’, Kaizer Jnr tells Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director, Kaizer Motaung Jnr, has called on everyone involved at the club to ‘be realistic’ as Arthur Zwane begins his tenure as the club’s head coach. The club on Thursday announced Zwane was taking over permanently on a three-year deal and will be assisted by Dillon Sheppard.

Having played for the club, Motaung Jnr is aware of the pressure of the Chiefs hot seat for any coach. More so that his former teammate takes over at a time when the team has gone seven seasons without a significant trophy.

“I think what needs to happen now is for everyone associated with the club to be realistic and needs to be honest; sometimes it’s a bit uncomfortable. Sometimes it involves change, and people don’t like that, but I think for us as a club, we need not live in the past, and we need to be realistic about our situation and what the team needs now, not just as a team.

“It’s [also] about the organisation. Now we hear of one component on the technical side, but there are many other particles. There’s the technical side, recruitment, there’s a high-performance side, business side and the financial side all those components have to function the right way,” Motaung Jnr told journalists recently.

He has thrown his weight behind Zwane, assuring him there won’t be interference. “We always have to be as professional as possible; any coach hired here, the chairman has never been a person to tell a coach whom to put on and what direction to take. The club’s approach and philosophy are there for a coach who comes in; he sees this is how the club is run, which is the direction the team wants to go.

“He has all the freedom to implement what he can to enhance that, and that’s why he is employed; otherwise, they’ll be no point using the coach; with the utmost respect, a bond is important, alignment is important, but of course, respecting the duties and responsibilities of the coach as paramount has always been that way,” added the 40-year-old.

Chiefs have not won any silverware since 2015 and will be hoping that the appointment of ‘10111’ brings back the glory days.
