Thembinkosi Lorch bags award in Morocco

Mamelodi Sundowns loanee Thembinkosi Lorch has bagged an award at Wydad Casablanca in Morocco following his impressive form.

‘Nyoso’ has grown in confidence since joining Wydad from Mamelodi Sundowns for the remainder of the season in the January 2025 transfer window.

The talented winger was reunited with Rulani Mokwena, who signed him from Orlando Pirates to Sundowns in the mid-season transfer window in the previous campaign.

In Lorch’s first three months in North Africa, he has provided the Red Castle with a different dimension in attack with his skill and pace.

The 31-year-old has featured in eight matches across all competitions for the Moroccan giants and scored one goal. Despite Wydad’s dip in form in the past few weeks, Lorch has been one of the standout players for the club, creating goal-scoring opportunities.

After featuring in three matches and scoring one goal in March, Lorch has been named the club’s Player of the Month.

The former Maluti FET College star will be looking to continue his bright form to help Wydad turn their fortunes.

In the past weekend, Wydad were knocked out of the Last 16 of the Throne Cup by MA Tétouan, ending their chances of winning a trophy this season.

The inconsistent run of form has seen pressure mount on head coach Rulani Mokwena as the club’s supporters are calling for his head.

After making a switch to Wydad from Sundowns at the start of the 2024/25 season, the Soweto-born tactician has collected 43 points in 23 games.

They are sitting third on the Botola Pro 1 table after winning 11 league matches, drawing 10, while losing four times. With seven games left before the end of the season, Mokwena will be looking to finish in the top two and qualify for next season’s CAF Champions League to save his job.
