South African defender Mhleli Mabuza has taken another significant step in his European journey after completing a move to Luxembourg champions FC Differdange 03.

The 25-year-old right-back, who can also operate as a winger, joins the Luxembourg top-flight outfit after spending last season with Portuguese side O Elvas CAD, continuing a career that has been built almost entirely in Europe.

Mabuza’s move this week represents another milestone for the Empangeni-born defender, whose consistent performances in Portugal have steadily elevated his reputation while attracting interest from Betway Premiership clubs.

Before joining O Elvas CAD, the former KZN Academy graduate featured for Portuguese clubs Amora FC and Louletano Desportos Clube, where he established himself as one of the standout full-backs in the Campeonato de Portugal.

His performances at Louletano were particularly impressive, with Mabuza registering nine assists during the campaign before being recognised as the league’s best right-back. That form alerted a number of South African clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, TS Galaxy, AmaZulu FC and Richards Bay FC.

Mabuza previously revealed that he underwent a brief assessment at Chiefs before ultimately deciding to continue his career in Portugal. The trial took place under difficult circumstances, between the final two matches of the Chiefs’ 2024/25 season, after his campaign in Portugal had already concluded.

“The timing of the trial was a bit tricky. It came between the last two games of their season as the club pushed for a top-eight finish, and over a month after my season in Portugal had ended. It was a bit of a compromise,” Mabuza told FARPost in a previous interview. “The tricky part was that Amora FC were also speaking to me. They knew me from my time at Louletano. They’re a very ambitious club in Liga 3 who want to push for promotion to Liga 2.”

His decision to return to Portugal proved to be another important step in his European career, eventually leading to his latest move to FC Differdange 03.

The Luxembourg side has handed Mabuza a one-year contract with an option to extend for a further season. The agreement also includes a release clause, reflecting the club’s awareness of the growing interest in the South African defender.

He joins one of Luxembourg’s most successful clubs, with FC Differdange 03 a regular participant in UEFA club competitions.

The club has consistently represented Luxembourg on the European stage in recent years, featuring in the qualifying rounds of the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League.
