Terrence Mashego is on the verge of joining Stellenbosch FC after Mamelodi Sundowns agreed to loan the experienced left-back to the Cape Winelands outfit, FARPost has established.

Mashego has already travelled to Stellenbosch to link up with head coach Gavin Hunt’s squad for pre-season preparations, bringing an end to speculation about where he would spend the 2026/27 campaign.

The move also reunites Mashego with Hunt, who coached him at the start of last season at Durban City FC before the veteran mentor’s departure. The pair are understood to have built a strong working relationship, with Hunt identifying the experienced left-back as a key figure in his plans before his exit from the club.

The decision comes despite strong interest from Durban City FC, who had made retaining the 29-year-old a priority after an impressive loan spell last season.

FARPost understands that Durban City FC explored every avenue to retain the Mamelodi-born defender. The reigning Nedbank Cup holders initially sought a permanent transfer, then proposed another season-long loan, offering to cover Mashego’s full salary to convince Sundowns. However, Sundowns have opted to send the defender to Stellenbosch instead.

The arrangement last season was different as Masandawana continued to pay the former Cape Town City FC fullback’s salary.

Mashego enjoyed one of his most consistent seasons in recent years with the KwaZulu-Natal side, making 28 appearances across all competitions as Durban City won the Nedbank Cup and finished in the league’s top eight. His move to Durban came after limited game time at the Brazilians.

His performances quickly established him as one of the club’s standout players, and chairman Farook Kadodia publicly confirmed that Durban City had approached Sundowns regarding a permanent move.

The club also believed the player was keen to remain in Durban after settling well during his loan spell. Despite those efforts, Sundowns have now opted for a different path for the defender, with Stellenbosch winning the race for his signature on loan.

Mashego joined Sundowns from Cape Town City FC in a high-profile transfer in 2022. He made an encouraging start at Chloorkop and forced his way into Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana squad, earning selection for the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where South Africa claimed the bronze medal.

But injuries and stiff competition for the left-back role limited his playing time. Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso has Bafana Bafana star Aubrey Modiba, Zimbabwe international Devine Lunga, Fawaaz Basadien and youth international Thato Sibiya as his left-back options, making regular game time hard to come by.
