Former Orlando Pirates and Yanga SC midfielder Mahlatse ‘Skudu’ Makudubela has joined Tunisian outfit US Monastir FC’s technical team as a video and performance analyst.
The 36-year-old teams up with former Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Romain Folz, who is the US Monastir head coach. Makudubela’s arrival in Tunisia marks a swift transition from being a professional footballer to coaching.
The move comes a few days after he announced his retirement as a player. His last club as a footballer was Siwelele FC, with whom he spent the second half of last season.
Making his switch from playing to coaching smooth is the fact that he holds a UEFA B licence, a qualification he earned before he hung up his boots. The retired midfielder also boasts a Level 2 opposition analysis badge.
According to his LinkedIn profile, the former Marumo Gallants star also studied football strength and conditioning with the Barca Innovation Hub and did football tactics periodisation mentorship in 2023.
That set him up for life after the pitch, and he has now joined Folz in Tunisia. He joins a growing list of South African coaches making forays across the African continent and the Middle East.

“New chapter, new beginnings, same passion,” Makudubela posted on his Instagram account on Monday as he reacted to his new role in his football career.
Working under Folz, who has carved himself a reputation as a nomad, Makudubela will be hoping for stability at US Monastir as he learns the ropes in the dugout. Folz has had a staggering 14 jobs in six years.
