Sekhukhune United have appointed Papi Zothwane as the replacement for outgoing head coach Cedric Kaze, following the club’s shaky start to the 2026/27 season under the Burundian tactician.
The Limpopo-based side has decided to part ways with Cedric Kaze, who took over the head coaching role in the pre-season to fill the void left by Eric Tinkler. The Burundian coach bagged the Sekhukhune job after leaving Kaizer Chiefs at the end of the previous Betway Premiership campaign.
Before joining Sekhukhune, Kaze co-coached Chiefs alongside Khalil Ben Youssef starting in September 2025 following the exit of Nasreddine Nabi, who ended Amakhosi’s ten-year trophy drought. Initially brought in as Nabi’s assistants, the coaching pair were ultimately released after a trophyless campaign, even though they secured a third-place log finish—Chiefs’ highest in recent campaigns.
After closing the Chiefs chapter, Kaze was aiming to build a successful career in the Premiership with Sekhukhune. However, he lasted less than four months at the helm.
The former Young Africans SC head coach endured a nightmare start to his tenure at Sekhukhune United, which featured three consecutive defeats against Orlando Pirates across the two-legged MTN8 semi-finals and a Betway Premiership clash.
PAPI ZOTHWANE LANDS THE HEAD COACH JOB
Consequently—as first revealed by FARPost—Babina Noko released Kaze by mutual agreement and promoted Papi Zothwane from assistant coach to lead the technical team.
“Sekhukhune United Football Club announces that Head Coach Cedric Kaze has departed from the club by mutual agreement, with immediate effect,” the club said in a statement on Tuesday night.
“The club expresses its sincere appreciation to Coach Kaze for his dedication, professionalism, and contribution during his tenure, and wishes him every success in his future endeavours.
“As part of the coaching transition, Papi Zothwane has been appointed to lead the technical team as Head Coach, assisted by Paulus Masehe, while Nascent Nkhwashu will continue in his role as Goalkeeper Coach.
“The club remains focused on ensuring stability, continuity, and a smooth transition as the team prepares for the challenges ahead.”
