Sekhukhune United could hand new signing Samba O’Neil his long-awaited debut when they face Stellenbosch FC in the Betway Premiership on Friday. Sekhukhune United visit Stellies at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town.
The experienced centre-back joined Babina Noko in the off-season after leaving Ghanaian giants Asante Kotoko but has been unable to feature while awaiting his documentation. FARPost has established that O’Neil has now received the necessary paperwork and is available for selection.
The 26-year-old has trained with Sekhukhune since pre-season and is understood to have made a strong impression on former head coach Cédric Kaze and his technical team. Kaze, who recently parted ways with the club, was eager to bring the defender into his side after seeing him settle quickly and perform exceptionally well in training.
With the paperwork now out of the way, O’Neil is in contention to make his debut against Stellenbosch. His availability gives interim coach Papi Zothwane another experienced defensive option as Babina Noko look to pick up momentum early in the campaign.
SAMBA O’NEIL READY TO STAKE NIGER CLAIM
A return to competitive football would also come at the right time for O’Neil, who is expected to join the Niger national team ahead of their upcoming 2027 AFCON qualifiers against Lesotho and Gabon later this month.
Although born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the defender represents Niger internationally after switching his allegiance. Having been unable to play for his new club, O’Neil will be eager to get minutes under his belt and strengthen his claim for a place in the Niger squad.
The experienced defender signed a two-year deal with Sekhukhune following an impressive 2025/26 campaign with Asante Kotoko. He made 34 appearances across all competitions and scored six goals despite primarily operating at centre-back.
His consistency, influence and leadership earned him the captain’s armband during the campaign, underlining his importance to the Porcupine Warriors. Sekhukhune moved to secure his services as they sought to add experience and leadership to their defensive department.
