Bafana Bafana winger Elias Mokwana is officially a free agent after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Tunisian giants Esperance. The agreement brings the 27-year-old’s two-year stay with the Tunisian champions to an end.
Esperance had been open to offers for Mokwana for some time. The club initially hoped to sell the former Sekhukhune United attacker rather than sanction another loan move.
However, with no suitable permanent offer arriving, the two parties agreed to part ways. The winger, nicknamed ‘Kiddeo’, still had a year left on his contract, which was due to expire in June 2027.
MOKWANA NOW WEIGHS UP HIS OPTIONS
The Mpumalanga-born attacker has attracted interest from clubs in Libya and Saudi Arabia, with his representatives now assessing the available options. He spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan at Saudi outfit Al-Hazm, where he made 26 appearances across all competitions, scoring once and providing three assists.
That spell helped Mokwana retain his place in the Bafana set-up, and he was part of the squad that competed at the 2025 AFCON in Morocco. However, he missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, the United States and Canada.
Mokwana joined Esperance from Sekhukhune in 2024 and made an immediate impact in Tunisia. He registered seven goals and four assists in 38 appearances across all competitions during his first season as the Red and Gold completed a league and cup double.
With his Esperance chapter now officially closed, Mokwana is free to negotiate his next move. He will be hoping to find a club soon, following the appointment of Pitso Mosimane as Bafana coach. Mosimane omitted Mokwana from his provisional squad to face Guinea and Eritrea later this month.
