Mamelodi Sundowns have bolstered their squad with the acquisition of South African youth international Lazola Maku on a free transfer. Masandawana announced the signing of the Amajita captain on Tuesday, 20 October 2026.
The teenage midfielder had been a free agent since July 2026 following his departure from Betway Premiership side Siwelele FC. Maku was caught up in a massive squad overhaul at Siwelele, which saw 23 players released ahead of the current campaign.
The mass exodus from Siwelele included notable names such as Lyle Lakay, Pogiso Sanoka, Ricardo Goss, Nyiko Mobbie, Happy Mashiane, Neo Rapoo, Gape Moralo, Samkelo Zwane, Samir Nurkoviฤ, Chibuike Ohizu and Kgaogelo Sekgota.
Enoch Quaicoe, Keanin Ayer, Koketso Sekgodiso, Ghampani Lungu, Bohlale Ngwato, Thabang Mahlangu, Mahlatse Makudubela, Maloisane Mokhele, Thabo Mokhele, Buhle Mkhwanazi, and Mandlenkosi Nkosi to complete the list.
MAMELODI SUNDOWNS WELCOME LAZOLA MAKU
Bafana Ba Style officially confirmed the acquisition through a brief statement welcoming the promising talent to Chloorkop.
“Mamelodi Sundowns are pleased to announce the signing of Lazola Maku! Yellow Nation, letโs give the youngster a proper welcome. New colours, new chapter, same ambition. Welcome to Bafana Ba Style, Lazola,” reads the club’s statement.
Maku was one of the standout performers under coach Raymond Mdaka, helping Amajita lift their historic first-ever Under-20 AFCON title after defeating Morocco 1-0 in the final held in Cairo in May 2025. His commanding performances in the middle of the park earned him a well-deserved spot in the tournament’s Best XI.
That stellar campaign paved the way for his senior career breakthrough last season, where he made five appearances for Siwelele.
Furthermore, Maku’s leadership qualities were recognised when he was named Amajita captain ahead of the 2026 COSAFA U-20 Championship. The regional tournament also served as a qualifier for the U-20 AFCON. He successfully led the side to COSAFA glory in Mozambique in September 2026.
